Gjilan

Gjilan’s history is rooted in Anamorava, a landscape in which settlement patterns, cultivated land and routes have long been closely connected. The municipal record places the area in a Dardanian context and identifies Roman-period settlement evidence as part of its older historical setting. These layers show that the locality belongs to a continuing pattern of habitation in eastern Kosovo rather than to a single moment of urban formation. Anamorava provided the geographic framework in which communities used the valley’s routes and agricultural ground across changing periods.

Ottoman-era records add a written dimension to this landscape, documenting the Anamorava area within the administrative and settlement world of the period. In the nineteenth century, the arrival of muhaxhir families brought a further change to the population history of the wider Gjilan area. Their settlement formed part of a broader movement of displaced families who rebuilt community life in Kosovo. Taken together, the Dardanian and Roman context, Ottoman-era record and muhaxhir settlement reveal a locality shaped by continuity as well as movement. Gjilan’s historical character comes from this interaction between an established settlement landscape, changing political frameworks and the people who made new homes in Anamorava.
