Settlement

Margeshi (Uglari)

Municipality Gjilan

Margeshi (Uglari) lies about 16 km southeast of Gjilan. A 1455 register mentions the form Ulari with 20 households, while the 1566–74 register records 10. An Austrian map from 1689 and late-19th-century yearbooks preserve the name Uglar.

After the expulsion of Albanians from the Sanjak of Niš in 1877–78, several muhajir families settled in the village and formed a separate neighbourhood. After 1913 there was migration to Turkey and later to North Macedonia and towns across Kosovo.

In 1999 the village had around 170 houses and approximately 1,300 Albanian residents. Eleven houses and six auxiliary buildings were burned; on 17 April the population was expelled to North Macedonia.
