Settlement

Dunav

Municipality Gjilan

Dunav, treated in the volume as Tunaj (Dunavi), lies about 22 km south of Gjilan in the Karadak mountains. It is a dispersed settlement with a long history of migration toward North Macedonia, Preshevë, Gjilan and Zhegër.

An Austrian map from 1689 records the village, while it is not clearly identified in earlier Ottoman documents. Before the last war only around 13 Albanian houses remained; by August 2000 just one inhabited house remained.

During 1999 three houses were burned and two civilians were killed. The primary school was damaged, and repeated shelling completely destroyed the mosque built in 1938.
