Haxhaj lies in the valley of the Zhegër River, near the old Gjilan-Kumanovo road, and is a compact settlement. Early-20th-century records show it as a small village that grew considerably over the following decades.
The 1921 census recorded nine houses and 28 residents, while by 1953 there were 23 houses and 205 residents. Before the 1999 war the settlement had grown to around 50 houses with approximately 420 Albanian residents.
During the war Serbian forces burned 11 houses completely and partially damaged another seven; 17 auxiliary buildings were also destroyed.
