Malmiri i Epërm (Sllakoci i Epërm) lies about 20 km west of Gjilan and is a dispersed hill-and-mountain settlement. Ceramic pipes found at Qunga indicate the existence of an older water-supply system.
The settlement took shape in the 19th century with Circassian families arriving after 1860, followed by Albanian muhajir families expelled from the Sanjak of Niš in 1877–78. Late-19th-century yearbooks record the name Sllakovci i Muhaxhirëve. In the decades after 1912 many families migrated to Turkey.
In 1999 the village had 44 families and around 600 Albanian residents. Twenty-three houses and other buildings were destroyed, and on 13 April the population was expelled to North Macedonia.
