Kurexh lies in the mountains above the valley of the Zhegër River, on its right-hand side. The settlement appears in late-19th-century Ottoman yearbooks, while the 1921 census recorded 20 houses and 111 residents.
The village history includes periods of severe violence. Chetnik bands killed several residents in 1912. In 1944 a Macedonian brigade burned part of the village and killed a number of inhabitants.
These episodes, together with later population movement, form a central part of Kurexh's local history and help explain the major changes the settlement experienced during the 20th century.
