Settlement

Bungeti (Bukoviku)

Municipality Gjilan

Bungeti (Bukoviku) lies about 10 km northeast of Gjilan, on mountain slopes along a valley. Pottery and traces of older structures have been found in its territory, and one locality preserves the foundations of an early church.

The settlement is recorded in the 1498 register of the Novo Brdo district and is mentioned again in a land deed from 1772. After the expulsions of Albanians in 1877–78, muhajir families settled here, while Slavic colonist families were also established during the interwar period.

In 1999 the village had around 23 inhabited Albanian houses. Repeated population movements during the 20th century had significantly reduced the size of the settlement.
