Malishta (Malisheva) lies about 4–5 km southeast of Gjilan in a lowland and hilly area. Building foundations, pottery, burials and traces of mining activity have been found in the village territory; local tradition also preserves the memory of an old church.
The settlement appears on an Austrian map from 1689 and in late-19th-century Kosovo Vilayet yearbooks. A muhajir neighbourhood developed after 1877–78, while 43 Slavic colonist families were settled here between the two world wars.
In 1944, 44 people were killed and dozens of houses burned by the 17th Macedonian Partisan Brigade. In 1999 the village again suffered destruction, killings and the expulsion of residents toward North Macedonia.
