Settlement

Stanaj (Stançiqi)

Municipality Gjilan

Stanaj (Stançiqi) lies in the southern part of the historical Gjilan municipal area, more than 25 km from the city, at an elevation of around 800 metres. The settlement is recorded in the 1566–74 Ottoman register with 21 households and in late-19th-century yearbooks as Istançik.

During the 20th century many families migrated to Turkey, Kumanovo, Skopje, Gjilan and Zhegër. These movements contributed to the decline of the village population.

In 1999 five houses were burned and many others damaged. The mosque built in 1906 was burned, while the school was destroyed. One KLA fighter and one civilian from the village were killed.
