Bresalci lies about 12 km northwest of Gjilan, in a hilly and mountainous area divided into neighbourhoods. The settlement has an early documentary record: it is mentioned in 1411, appears in a 1455 register as Brajsaliq, and on an Austrian map from 1689 as Bresul. Late-19th-century yearbooks preserve the form Bresalca.
After 1878, Albanian muhajir families expelled from the Sanjak of Niš also settled here. Between the two world wars, 20 Serbian and Montenegrin colonist families were established in the village.
In 1999 Serbian attacks killed eight people and destroyed houses and auxiliary buildings. The village mosque, built in 1856, was burned on 10 April 1999.
