City & municipality guide

Gjakova

Gjakova is a western Kosovo city best explored through its old bazaar, craft traditions, courtyard restaurants and nearby heritage landmarks.

Old bazaar, craft and courtyard life

Gjakova is known for its Çarshia e Madhe, a historic bazaar district where lanes, workshops, cafés and small courtyards make the city especially good for an unhurried urban visit. It has a distinctly different rhythm from Kosovo’s larger centres.

What to look for

Use the Grand Bazaar of Gjakova as the anchor, then connect Hadum Mosque, the Clock Tower, Hani i Vjetër, Hani – Shpija e Vjetër and other old-town places in the collection. These stops work best together as a walk rather than isolated pins.

Make room for the wider area

Gjakova can also be paired with Radoniq Lake or a longer western Kosovo route. Individual heritage and hospitality places may have changing access arrangements, so confirm details directly before a special visit.

History

A brief history of Gjakova

Gjakova stands within a Dukagjin landscape shaped by long-distance movement, older settlement and the resources of its surrounding terrain. The historical record places the area on routes associated with the Via de Zenta, one of the connections that crossed this part of Kosovo toward wider Balkan and Adriatic networks. These routes gave local settlements access to passing travellers, exchange and communication long before Gjakova assumed its later urban role. The Deva mineral-resource area was another important feature of the wider setting, linking the locality’s history to a landscape valued not only for fields and routes but also for extraction.

The evidence reaches back beyond the city’s later development. Prehistoric traces, followed by Dardanian and Roman-period context, show that the Gjakova area belongs to a much older pattern of settlement in the Dukagjin region. Medieval traces add a further layer, showing continuity of human use and changing forms of habitation rather than a single, fixed urban beginning. Read together, the route corridor, the mineral landscape and the archaeological record explain why Gjakova developed within a connected regional setting. Its story is best understood through the meeting of movement, resources and settlement across successive historical periods.
