Korenicë

Municipality Gjakova

Korenicë lies in the Rekë e Keqe area near Gjakovë, a landscape of villages, routes and cultivated land west of the city. Its historical record includes local and archival references that place it within the older history of the Gjakova region. The settlement’s name appears alongside material on local development and the changing administrative landscape of the twentieth century.

The events of 1999 give Korenicë a particularly painful place in recent history. During the Meja and Korenicë crimes, Kosovo Albanian residents were forcibly expelled and people were killed or disappeared. The related documented events provide fuller context. Korenicë is both a living locality of Rekë e Keqe and a community whose recent history was shaped by war.

As part of Rekë e Keqe, Korenicë belongs to a region whose settlements have been connected by local routes and the wider life of Gjakovë. That regional frame helps preserve the village’s identity beyond the events of the war.
