City & municipality guide
Peja
Peja is a western Kosovo city where a walkable centre, craft traditions and historic sites meet the dramatic Rugova Gorge and Bjeshkët e Nemuna.
A city at the foot of Rugova
Peja combines an everyday city centre with one of Kosovo’s strongest mountain landscapes immediately to its west. It is a practical base for travellers who want cultural stops, local food and direct access towards Rugova.
Explore the city, then the valley
In and around Peja, the ViewKosova collection includes the Patriarchate of Peja, Haxhi Zeka Mill, the old bazaar area and White Drin Waterfall. Rugova Gorge and Valley, Bogë, Kuqishtë, Leqinat Lake and Via Ferrata Rugova turn the city into a useful starting point for a longer outdoor itinerary.
Plan around conditions
Allow separate time for the city and the mountains: Rugova is not a quick add-on if you are hiking or travelling beyond the gorge. Trail, road, weather and activity conditions are seasonal, so use current local guidance for any mountain plan.

History
A brief history of Peja
Peja grew where the Lumbardh valley opens from the mountains toward the Dukagjin Plain. That position made the valley a route between upland and lowland communities, while also giving the wider Peja area a setting for settlement over a long period. The municipal historical record places this development in a Dardanian context, linking the area to the settlement patterns that preceded Roman rule. Rather than standing apart from its surroundings, Peja developed within a landscape where watercourses, valley routes and the plain created enduring connections.
The Ottoman conquest of 1426 marked a new political framework for the town and its hinterland. In the periods that followed, Peja’s crafts and trade expanded, drawing on the movement of people and goods through the valley and across the plain. This growth gave the town an urban character shaped by work, exchange and the wider network of settlements around it. The older Dardanian setting, the routes of the Lumbardh valley and later Ottoman-era change belong to the same long story: a locality formed by access between mountains and plain, then strengthened by craft and commercial life. Peja’s historical character emerges from that continuity of landscape and connection.
