Drelaj is a central Rugova settlement above Peja, set in a mountain landscape shaped by pastures, routes and small valleys. A local tradition links its name to Ndre Nikë and early founders; this is best understood as a local explanation rather than a conclusive origin. The locality also preserves references to older church remains, a reminder that Rugova’s history is layered well beyond its modern mountain identity.
The village developed as part of the wider Rugova region, where movement between highland settlements and Peja was central to everyday life. In 1999, destruction in Drelaj formed part of the war’s impact on the area. This recent loss sits within a longer story of landscape, local memory and documentary history.
Rugova’s highland settlements have long depended on links between valleys, pastures and the town below. Drelaj’s setting helps explain a local history in which landscape, movement and community memory are inseparable.
