History

A brief history of Istog

Istog belongs to Podgur, a settlement landscape documented through medieval records and Ottoman defters. The historical section describes a rural area in which agriculture, livestock and exchange shaped village life, while routes connected its communities with the wider Dukagjin region. Written records from the late fifteenth century preserve several settlements in the present municipal area, giving the landscape a clear documentary depth.

Population movement later altered this setting. Muhaxhir families settled in local villages including Veriq, Rakosh, Prigodë and Zallç after their displacement in 1877–78. The area also appears in Albanian political activity: an armed confrontation occurred at Istog in 1893 during the uprising led by Haxhi Zeka, and local representatives participated in the Peja assembly of 1897. These records connect Istog’s history with its agricultural landscape, resettlement and political mobilisation.
