Qyshk lies on the Peja plain, only a short distance east of the city and today close to its urban edge. Its setting made it part of the wider agricultural and social landscape around Peja, while its local identity remained that of a distinct settlement. Its documentary trail gives the village a history beyond the event for which it is now internationally known.
In May 1999, Qyshk was among the villages where Kosovo Albanian civilians suffered grave violence during the Kosovo War. The events are explored in ViewKosova’s Documented Events collection. Qyshk’s wartime experience formed part of a wider campaign of violence by Serbian and Yugoslav forces in the Peja area, while the village itself remains a community with a longer rural and historical story.
Qyshk’s position near Peja also explains why its local history is tied to the wider plain, its roads and neighbouring villages. That setting is essential for reading the village as a place with its own continuity rather than only through the violence of 1999.
