Skenderaj

Skenderaj belongs to the central Drenica landscape of hills, valleys and agricultural ground. Its historical setting was shaped by routes through Drenica, including connections toward Mitrovica, Peja, Prishtina and Vushtrri. The municipal record notes older sites across the region, with archaeological remains and fortified places at Tushilë, Baicë, Syriganë and near Llaushë.

In antiquity, this area formed part of the Dardanian world; Roman-era change brought settlement activity near trading routes. Ottoman registers later provide written evidence for many Drenica villages. The record also describes the arrival of muhaxhir families displaced from the Sanjak of Niš in several settlements during the late nineteenth century. These layers show a local centre shaped by the Drenica valley, older sites and successive movements of people.
