History
A brief history of Vushtrri
Vushtrri occupies a long-standing route corridor in northern Kosovo. Ancient and medieval roads crossing the area linked Prizren, Skopje, Peja, Mitrovica, Nish and other Balkan centres, making movement a constant feature of its setting. Archaeological material from the municipality, including tools, ceramics, glass and ornaments, points to early habitation, while hilltop forts at places such as Dubofc, Strofc and Samadrexhë preserve the outline of older settlement patterns.
The municipal history places this landscape within northern Dardania and records the Roman-period context of Viciana. Roman rule reorganised settlement around roads and lower ground, while the earlier fortified sites remained part of the archaeological record. This provides a useful historical frame for Vushtrri’s compact old core: it grew within a region shaped over time by routes, river plains, fortified places and successive forms of urban life.
