Settlement

Peqan

Municipality Suhareka

Peqan preserves varied traces of material culture and archaeological localities. In the yard of one house, a raised feature has been identified as a possible ancient tumulus, while other traces of habitation are also visible within the settlement's territory.

The village is mentioned in documents from 1348 and in the memorial book of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, kept from 1465. It also appears on an Austrian map compiled from information dating to 1689. During the interwar period some families emigrated to Turkey and elsewhere.

Before the 1998–99 war Peqan had around 220 houses and approximately 2,624 Albanian residents. The village faced offensives, burning and displacement during the conflict. After spending about ten days in Pagarushë, most residents found refuge in Albania. This period had lasting consequences for the life and structure of the settlement.
