Viti is in southeastern Kosovo. ViewKosova’s preserved legacy municipality record describes an area of 297 km² and a population of 47,636 in 2012.

The same record lists settlements including Ballancë, Binçë, Letnicë, Pozharan and Remnik. These details are retained as local reference material from the legacy catalogue.

History

A brief history of Viti

Viti belongs to the Anamorava landscape, where valleys, cultivated ground and settlement routes have connected communities over a long period. The municipal history places the area in the Dardanian context and records archaeological and place-based evidence from different localities. Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods brought successive administrative and settlement changes, while Ottoman defters and later sources preserve written traces of the area’s villages.

Population movement is an important part of this local history. The source records Circassian settlement in several places after 1862 and the arrival of Albanian muhaxhir families after the displacement from the Sanjak of Niš. It also notes the 1846 exile of Catholic Albanian residents from several villages of the wider municipality. Together, these layers show how communities in Viti’s valleys were shaped by settlement, migration and changing administration.
