St. Saviour Church

A medieval church above the old city

St. Saviour Church, known in Albanian as Kisha e Shën Spasit, stands in the southeastern part of Prizren’s historic Nënkalaja quarter. Kosovo’s Cultural Heritage Database dates the original church to 1333–35 and records it in a written source from 1348.

Architecture built in stages

The compact medieval structure combines stone and brickwork and retains painted decoration from the 14th century. In 1836, Prizren’s Aromanian community began a larger church around it, adding higher walls and a bell tower. The result is an unusual layered monument whose unfinished outer structure frames the earlier church.

Approach it as religious heritage

Its hillside position makes the church a meaningful stop on the walk between Prizren’s old town and fortress area. It is a protected religious monument rather than a guaranteed walk-in attraction. Dress and behave respectfully, follow any on-site instructions and confirm current access locally without assuming fixed opening hours.
