Novoberda Fortress
Novoberda Fortress rises above eastern Kosovo as the remnant of a medieval mining town, with wide views and a clear sense of the region’s layered history.
A medieval hilltop town
Novoberda Fortress occupies a high ridge in eastern Kosovo, above the town of Artana. The site is associated with a medieval urban and mining centre, once important for the area’s mineral wealth and regional connections.
Read the landscape as well as the walls
The remaining fortification is best understood with its setting: the approach, ridge and views explain why this was a strategic place. It is not a fully furnished museum, so allow time to walk carefully and interpret the ruins in their wider landscape.
Use the current site conditions
Ground conditions and access can vary with weather and conservation work. Wear suitable footwear, respect barriers and use current local information before travelling from Prishtina or Gjilan.
