Zllakuqan lies in the western part of the Dukagjin Plain, in the White Drin valley, about 7 km northeast of Klina. The historical form Zallkuqan survives in local memory. Roman-period inscriptions found in the area link the locality with early habitation, while later documents mention village residents in the Deviç Monastery register in 1761, 1778 and 1779.
The Kosovo Vilayet yearbooks of 1893, 1896 and 1900 record the settlement as Izllokuqan. In 1919, Serbian and Montenegrin army and gendarmerie forces set fire to homes and property, forcing the population to leave temporarily. Seven residents — four elderly men and three women — were killed, while another source for the same year records the burning of 25 houses.
During the interwar period, the colony register records the settlement of 41 Slavic colonist families with 187 members in the Zllakuqan–Klina locality. In 1999, the settlement had 113 families with 981 residents and, during the war, also sheltered a substantial number of displaced people from nearby villages.
