Stupa lies about 13 km northwest of Klina. Its neighbourhoods form distinct parts of the settlement. The terrain is lowland. Recorded traces around the settlement include roof tiles, bricks, bridge remains, evidence of earlier habitation and use of the area.
The settlement appears in written records from 1220, with further references in 1330, 1893. Historical forms of the name recorded in documents include Stlpezi. The 20th century also brought emigration of residents to the United States and Croatia. During the interwar period, 25 Serbian or Montenegrin colonist families were settled here.
