Shtupel lies about 6 km northeast of Klina. The terrain is hilly. Recorded traces around the settlement include roof tiles, bricks, bridge remains, evidence of earlier habitation and use of the area.
Some of these traces are associated with the Illyrian-Dardanian period. The settlement appears in written records from 1327, with further references in 1485, 1761. Historical forms of the name recorded in documents include Shtupul e Shtupal. During the interwar period, around 1931, 41 Serbian or Montenegrin colonist families were settled here.
In 1912, the settlement suffered burning, looting or killings during actions by Serbian forces. During the 1998–1999 war, Serbian forces caused burning and destruction, the killing of 9 civilians and one KLA fighter, 4 people reported missing, the expulsion or displacement of residents.
