Mirena lies about 16 km west of Lipjan, at the foot of Golesh and Blinaja, in the Drenica region. Local tradition places the older village at the locality called Trojet, while house foundations found at Arat e Vanës indicate an earlier extent of settlement.
After the expulsion of Albanians from the Sanjak of Niš in 1877–78, muhajirs from Toplica also settled in Mirena. Kosovo Vilayet yearbooks from 1893, 1896 and 1900 record the form Mirina. During the Yugoslav Kingdom there was also emigration to Turkey.
In 1998 Mirena had around 63 houses and approximately 680 Albanian residents. In 1999, during Serbian attacks, 13 residents were killed and two houses were burned. On 26 March the population left the village and took refuge in Blinaja, Kleçkë, Pjetreshticë and other places.
