Marec lies about 11 km southeast of Lipjan. The settlement was established in the early 19th century by Albanians who came from Marec in the Prishtina region, from which it also took its name. The locality was then part of Gadime's land and was cleared for farming and settlement; for a period Marec was administratively counted as a neighbourhood of Gadime.
In 1925–29 the Yugoslav agrarian authorities settled eight Serbian and Montenegrin colonist families on land near the village. They left in 1941. In 1928 several Albanian families emigrated to Turkey and Skopje, while others later moved to towns within Kosovo.
In 1999 Marec had around 50 houses and approximately 250 Albanian residents. Serbian attacks burned 12 houses. On 20 March the population left the village for Macedonia, Albania and other places.
