Settlement

Makreshi i Poshtëm

Municipality Artana

Makreshi i Poshtëm lies about 16 km northwest of Gjilan, in a hilly and mountainous area between two watercourses. Fifteenth-century records preserve the forms Machres and Machrexa; a 1455 register gives Majkros, while the settlement is separately recorded as Makreshi i Poshtëm in 1498.

After the expulsion of Albanians from the Sanjak of Niš in 1877–78, muhajir families settled here. After 1913 the village experienced pressure, killings and migration to Turkey. In December 1944, eight people were killed by a Macedonian-Kosovar brigade.

By spring 1999 only around 10 Albanian houses remained. Residents were beaten and deported, while houses and property were burned. Today the settlement belongs to Artana/Novo Brdo.
