Makreshi i Epërm lies about 15 km north of Gjilan and is a hilly and mountainous settlement divided into neighbourhoods. Agricultural work has uncovered bricks, pottery and wall foundations indicating earlier habitation.
The settlement appears as Machres/Machrexa in 15th-century records. A 1455 register preserves the form Majkros, while Makreshi i Epërm is recorded in 1498. Albanian muhajir families also settled here after 1877–78.
At the end of the Second World War, the 17th Macedonian Brigade executed 12 members of one family and two guests. Today Makreshi i Epërm belongs to the municipality of Artana/Novo Brdo, although the volume treats it within the historical Gjilan area.
