Gadimja e Epërme lies about 14–15 km southeast of Lipjan, across nearby valleys and hills. East of the village rises Kalaja-Gradina, a site associated with Dardanian Iron Age culture; on the plain below the hill, traces of a small Roman-period settlement have also been found.
The settlement appears in documents associated with Vuk Branković in the late 14th century. A register of the Kaza of Novobërda from 1498 records it as Gadimja Gorna with 33 household heads. An Austrian map from 1689 and late-19th-century yearbooks preserve the continuity of the name Gadime.
In 1998 the village had 327 houses and 3,276 Albanian residents. On 16 April 1999 residents and thousands of people sheltering in the village were expelled toward North Macedonia; in May two Albanian houses were burned.
