Bokshiq lies about 8 km southwest of Klina, between the Baran and Leshan valleys. It is a compact settlement divided into neighbourhoods. Bricks, roof tiles and other building material found at Kulla e Hajdinit point to an earlier phase of habitation, while old burial grounds are also preserved in the area.
Local tradition preserves several earlier forms of the settlement's name, including Vneshtë and Bokë, before the form Bokshiq came into use. During the interwar period, beginning in 1932, 14 Serbian and Montenegrin colonist families were settled here. A migration to Turkey is also recorded in 1956.
Before the 1998–1999 war, Bokshiq had 64 Albanian families with 503 residents and one Montenegrin family. During the war, 56 of the village's 64 houses were destroyed or damaged, together with agricultural and auxiliary buildings. Serbian forces killed or massacred 6 residents, while one person remained missing.
