Balaj (Balinca) is in the municipality of Malisheva. An Ottoman register from 1485 documents the settlement under the form Balinc with 9 households and 2 unmarried men. A later register from 1893 documents the settlement.
For 1998–99, the source documents expulsion. Archaeological traces mentioned in the study include an inscription. Historical sources also record the settlement under the form Banice.
