Balaj (Balinca) is in the municipality of Malisheva. An Ottoman register from 1485 documents the settlement under the form Balinc with 9 households and 2 unmarried men. An Ottoman register from 1893 documents the settlement.

For 1998–99, the source documents expulsion. The evidence includes an inscription, pointing to earlier habitation. Historical sources also record the settlement under the form Banice.
