Akllap lies in the valley of the Akllap River, at the foot of the Zhegoc mountains, about 11 km east of Lipjan. The settlement is divided into neighbourhoods and is mainly compact in form. At Lugu i Kishës, Bira e Kishës and Tërhollë, local tradition preserves memories of old churches, while foundations, bricks and roof tiles have been found at Ograxhë; the wider area also contains evidence of ore smelting.
Ottoman records list Akllap as Okllap in 1498 and mention it again in the 1566–74 register. A land deed issued in Janjevë in 1749 also preserves the village name. After the expulsion of Albanians from the Sanjak of Niš in 1877–78, muhajir families settled here.
At the beginning of 1999 the village had 128 houses and around 1,320 Albanian residents. On 15 April 1999, 84 houses and several auxiliary buildings were burned.
