How ViewKosova builds its History content: with identifiable sources, preserved categories and a clear distinction between registers, context and unresolved questions.

How this History section works

Where sources identify governments, state institutions, police, military, paramilitary formations or political programmes, the pages name them clearly. This is not collective guilt for every ethnic Serb. Where sources document the suffering of other communities, that material is retained and presented with the same care for context.

ViewKosova does not reproduce the books wholesale. It selects facts, figures, timelines and local records, ties them to a source chapter and page where available, and encourages readers to consult the works themselves.

Noel Malcolm and the colonisation-study review

Noel Malcolm, the British historian and author of Kosovo: A Short History, is not a co-author of Osmani’s research. In the second expanded edition of Kolonizimi Serb i Kosovës, he is listed as reviewer. His signed, unheaded assessment describes the study as valuable for its detailed archival investigation and says that the historical facts need to be known. It also clearly separates the history of colonisation from policy towards Kosovo’s Serb minority today.

How figures are handled

External context is presented as context. It does not silently replace Osmani’s registers. A figure from an international organisation and a category from a local register therefore remain visibly separate rather than becoming one blended dataset.

Historical administrative boundaries

The 1998–1999 municipal registers use historical administrative scopes that do not always match today’s 38 municipalities. ViewKosova preserves the original scope, does not redistribute totals mathematically and does not duplicate a historical total across successor municipalities. Where a present-day municipality was not a separate source scope, the page explains that rather than displaying zero.

International and contextual sources

OSCE/ODIHR, UNHCR, Human Rights Watch, ICTY / IRMCT and NATO are used for wider context: displacement, chronology, international intervention, and legal or institutional context. They remain separately attributed and are not invisibly blended into Osmani’s datasets.

How we communicate source certainty

Some material is reported directly by a principal source. Other material is independently corroborated or supplied as context. When records are incomplete or conflicting, the uncertainty is stated openly rather than converted into false precision.
